AMcE Creative Arts is pleased to present Embodiment – a group show of works that touch on memory and history

May 18 – June 30, 2024

The works in Embodiment contend with personal and collective histories, relationships, and memory. Through varying media, the six featured artists reflect on the past’s influence on our present modalities and whether it offers confluence or opposition. Our human connection to the intricacies of external and internal systems and environments are also considered. The work’s elements and imagery serve as puzzle pieces of a bigger picture perspective.

Opening Reception: Saturday, May 18, 5p – 7p

Saturday, June 8, 3p: Curatorial walk through and an afternoon of artist talks with Alfred Harris, Rachel Maxi, Megan Prince, and Cara Tomlinson.

Sunday, June 30, 3p – 5p: AMcE’s third anniversary celebration and closing reception for Embodiment

Out of the Box: METHOD Silent Auction & Gala

My contribution for Method Gallery “Out of the Box” is made out of the box.

What happens when you give an artist that likes to use reclaimed materials a specific material? They use it. I applied time and fire with woodworking tools and finished with tung oil. My piece “Time Burns Away” is part of my current series “1,000 Paintings of Love” and available for bidding online 12/2 and viewing at Method during First Thursday and at the Gala.

BELIEVE WOMEN

It is with a heavy heart that I share my final performance hours for phase two of “Tying/Untying” happened Thursday, July 27, from 4-7pm. This final performance was done in solidarity with women.

Believe Women; Women: if you think or feel strange about something, TRUST YOURSELF.

“Tying/Untying” echos the frustration and reward of working together. Performance materials and costume generously donated by @prairieunderground

It was fun to be out of town and find a copy of the article on Buy Nothing in the Sunday Seattle Times with a reproduction of my Jean Body sculpture, You’ve Been On My Mind! There something about being with something physically, holding it in your hands, that makes it feel real.

Virtual Book Club this Wednesday, March 1 from 6-7pm; join us on Instagram LIVE. Ellen McGivern and I will be discussing Circe by Madeline Miller. Check my companion book list for an insight into what inspires me! If you haven’t been to the Kirkland Library yet to see my installation, Seeing Remnants in Life, make sure you head over this month! It’s open through March 30.

Remnants are the leftovers in life. Frequently seen as invaluable and discarded. Remnants can be powerful when given a voice or even our attention. Choosing to notice and acknowledge what we throw away can inform what we take in. I ask myself what have I discarded recently and wasted without need? What do I take for granted, as a given? If I put in a little effort can I make that remnant a desired whole again? Reestablishing its value? Or give new life?

Megan Prince: Seeing Remnants in Life, featuring two large-scale works, is up now through March 30, 2023 the Kirkland Library, KCLS in partnership with The Kirkland Arts Center. This project is also supported, in part, by a grant from 4Culture.

Impermanent, 2022, red Sharpie on photography seamless, 80x105 inches. Impermanent is the largest from Prince’s 1,000 Paintings of Love series, each unique piece points to the individuality and importance of each of us in this life. This large-work on paper was made with non-archival materials and will degrade with time from the acids in both the Sharpie marker and photography seamless paper. The photography seamless used to make this work was donated by John and Nichelle Keatley.

Red Ratchet Strap Remnant Relationship (RRSRR), 2023, reclaimed red ratchet straps, 92 x 339 inches. RRSRR is the largest from Prince’s Remnant Relationships series, hand-constructed wall sculptures. Her material choice speaks to accessibility and inclusion of all people and being a steward of our world. Frequently made from leftover pieces of cast-off or remnant fiber materials which the artist gathers from her community at large. The 12,000 feet of reclaimed red ratchet straps used to make this work were donated by SuttonBeresCuller.

Tying/Untying Video is live!

Tying/Untying, my month-long performance during Reworked at The Vestibule gallery, is finished. It was such a joy to make this participatory durational performance piece with you and for you. Thank you to everyone that came out and participated! Those of you that happened to come during my weekly performance sessions will be able to catch glimpses of yourselves in my Time-lapse videos on my IG @meganprinceart. I will be consolidating them into one full video piece soon. I have many many other pieces of documentation from this time and I will be adding them here on my website as quickly as I can. You will be able to find it all together under the Videos and Performance tab in the WORK section of my website soon. In the meantime here is a video that was made about this performance. Enjoy!

Pick up a Love Painting during Reworked for your Valentine!

This is the last week to see Reworked at The Vestibule gallery. While this beautifully paired show with myself and Lee Davignon features sculptural works utilizing repurposed materials, my performance Tying/Untying, and works on paper from my 1,000 Paintings of Love series closes this Saturday, 2/11, make sure to pick out your Love Painting (ask for it to be framed at the gallery before you pick it up!) and you’ll be set for Valentines Day next Tuesday!

I’m making these Love Paintings just for you all! I believe every person should have real art in thier life. I make each unique piece with hand-drawn ink lines and individually hand-mixed colors. Not one is the same. Just like us! We are all individuals, and we all deserve to be loved and belong just as we are.

I have made 112 of them to date and 42 of them are available to see together for the first time in this show! Pick out your favorite and take it home to the one you love most (could definitely be yourself, self-love is so important!) as a reminder to love and be loved.

Installation of Megan Prince’s Seeing Remnants in Life at The Kirkland Library, Kirkland, WA 2023.

Seeing Remnants in Life, consists of Impermanent (red Sharpie on photography seamless, 80x105 inches, 2022), and Red Ratchet Strap Remnant Relationship (RRSRR, reclaimed red ratchet straps, 92x339 inches, 2023) a reconfigurable multi-component fibers sculpture. Impermanent is the largest work in my 1,000 Paintings of Love series, each unique piece points to the individuality and importance of each of us in this life. RRSRR, from my Remnant Relationship series, uses remnant materials as a micro look at what we consider as cast-offs in society; a vehicle to think about what we consider unusable or garbage.

Reworked

Reworked: Lee Davignon and Megan Prince, January 12 - Feb 11 at The Vestibule
Reception Saturday, Jan 14 4-6 pm

Tying/Untying Performance Hours: weekly on Thursdays from 5-7pm and Saturdays from 2-4pm watch Timelapse footage from my performances here.

Press release for Reworked at The Vestibule.

Lee Davignon and Megan Prince rework textile and plastic into sculpture and installations. In her participatory, durational performance, Tying/Untying, Prince invites visitors to knot a mass of reused textile while she attempts to unknot it and remake it into a sculpture. The project echoes the frustration and reward of working with others.

Davignon, a weaver by training, unmakes material while keeping its history of use. They unwind marine rope, ball hair, break up plastic packaging, and then they reweave or resculpt it until it is almost unrecognizable. They model how art-making ought to be aware of its material history and material future.

Distilled: Contemporary Abstraction

In the art world the word abstraction is slippery in its meaning and the category is large. There are many connotations. It presumes many different visions and ways of working all pulled out of the representational world and distinct. For this exhibition we look toward work that takes a concept to its core with a clarified aspect. But even in the included pieces by these seven artists there are many ways of working. For some it might be a considered simplification, the concept distilled to its essential parts, whittled down. For some they submerge themselves in a place or ingest a researched idea distilling it to its essential parts, iterating and perhaps reiterating it after much time circling the mind. For all of the included artists what you are seeing is an offering of something of the repeated trace of the original idea. Whether simple or complex in its aspect each is made with a highly considered touch or gesture, honed.
