I’m excited to announce a new public work!
Ratchet straps, once tools of tension and compression, are transformed into flowing, lyrical forms that evoke rock strata, tree limbs, or ribbons of wind. Building upon previous versions of this artwork for Seattle Center, this fifth iteration softens and deepens the original sculptural gesture, leaning into the poetics of restraint. The addition of poetry—directly inscribed into the materials—extends an invitation: to pause, reflect, receive, and be curious.
Prince with her installation “Shifting Ribbons (RRSRR5)” in the Poetry Garden at Seattle Center, for the 2025 Sculpture Walk. Seattle, WA 2025
Prince developed a series of poems reflecting on rest, reuse, and the quiet beauty of paring back—of holding what remains and embracing the fleeting rhythms of daily life.
Inscribed on ratchet straps in black and white paint marker and hand-worked into the sculpture, these poems create moments of curiosity and reflection woven directly into the form.
Rooted in the strength of salvaged materials and the endurance of memory, the work offers a gentle invitation to slow down, look closely, and find contentment in what endures. It shifts the focus from accumulation to appreciation, encouraging viewers to honor what is already here: the frayed, the mended, and the still-strong.
Shifting Ribbons will be up through November 2025.
This project was commissioned by the City of Seattle Office of Arts and Culture.
